Landmass London visit Decca factory

The final stage of the 'Bespoke By Decca' project involved a trip to the factory to inspect the pieces prior to them being shipped.

When Landmass were announced as the winner of our competition, we spent some time developing the collection with them. We had a number of meetings to finalise the design details of the 4 pieces and once all drawings were approved, production began.

During this development process, we looked at the finishes and practicalities of each piece. The chevron design, using quarter cut oak, was enhanced by adding in a slightly darker stain into the sandblasted grain. This subtle addition gave more depth to the finish and made the pattern more visible, especially on larger areas as shown on the bookcase.

We also used a stainless steel with a PVD coating for the metalwork to create a brushed brass look that also made use of the superior strength of steel for the supporting structures. The added bonus of using PVD is that the pieces can be customised easily, and there are a number of colour options for the metalwork, including copper, nickel, bronze, and many more.

For the bookcase, we added in grooves to each shelf to allow the screens to be re-positioned allowing the unit to be reconfigured for display purposes.

Having made these design decisions it was interesting to see the pieces towards the end of production in the factory.

Ricky was the project manager for the whole of the Bespoke By Decca project and he took us to the inspection rooms to view and comment on the pieces.

The pieces looked great, and it was satisfying for Ruth and Eleri to finally see the results of their hard work. The use of finishes  in relation to the geometric metal structures, as shown on the coffee table, create a good balance.  The bookshelf really stood out as being exceptionally beautiful. The combination of the wood finish and the brass detailing work really well together, as does the collection as a whole.

We went over each piece in detail with Ricky and discussed areas that needed slight tweaks and changes.
In the afternoon, Ricky gave the Landmass designers a full tour of the factory, which included a visit to the hand carving workshop, which seemed to impress.

We left for Hong Kong later that afternoon and rounded off the day with a good meal and enjoyed the nightlife around the mid-levels before heading back to the hotel. Ruth and Eleri were a pleasure to host and we wish them well with their collection.
