In addition, we asked Erin a few questions to give you an insight into her view of the creative process as a multidisciplinary designer.

What is the favourite part of your job as a multidisciplinary designer?

Being able to shift between big picture concepts to in-depth, highly detailed problem solving never gets old. I like to work both sides of my brain. When you think about it, creativity is really only 10% of the equation. 90% of what I do is managing the process of getting something built. No two days are the same, which I love.

Do you think you have more freedom working on interiors, furniture, or fabrics?

That's a tough one. It really depends on the client or the problem being solved. I actually find comfort in constraints - they force you to be resourceful. When given the world, what will you design? Which by the way, is something I experienced designing the Gait™ Collection for Decca! That's a very daunting prospect. But exciting nonetheless.

As a designer of both furniture and fabrics, how do you see these two elements working together?

With all materials, you want to make sure they suit the product being designed, or see if they can be used in unexpected ways. I recently designed a fabric comprised of cork veneer that can be used as a wall treatment or upholstery fabric. I would love to develop a proprietary fabric or mesh where the fabric is itself the structure.

What criteria do you consider most important when choosing furniture for your interior design projects?

Aesthetics that are cohesive with the project, and functionality.
